Common specifications

Minerals are defined by representative assay, physical sizing, moisture and the penalty elements relevant to processing.

  • Iron ore: Fe, silica, alumina, phosphorus, sulphur, moisture and sizing
  • Bauxite: available alumina, reactive silica, total silica and moisture
  • Chrome ore: Cr₂O₃, Cr:Fe ratio, silica, phosphorus, moisture and size

Uses & processing

Iron ore feeds steelmaking; bauxite feeds alumina refining; chrome ore supports ferrochrome and stainless steel; copper ores feed concentration, smelting and refining; limestone, gypsum and dolomite serve cement, metallurgy, construction and industrial processing.

Mines, beneficiation plants & stockyards

The ecosystem includes mines, crushers, screens, washing or beneficiation plants, concentrators, assay laboratories, rail or truck loading points, blending yards and export stockpiles. Representative sampling must reflect the contractual lot and moisture condition.

Ports & export infrastructure

Major mineral corridors connect dedicated mine railways and bulk terminals in Western Australia, Brazil, Southern Africa and other producing regions to Asian, European and Middle Eastern processing centres. Draught, stockyard segregation and loading rate influence feasible shipment size.

Shipping & handling

Ores and minerals commonly move in dry-bulk vessels. Cargo declaration, moisture testing, transportable moisture limit where applicable, trimming, hold preparation, weight distribution and safe loading and discharge must follow the relevant cargo schedule and vessel requirements.

Why is a recent assay required?

Mineral composition can vary by deposit, bench, stockpile and shipment. A representative, recent assay helps test suitability and define acceptance limits.

What is the main shipping risk for some fine bulk cargoes?

Excess moisture can create instability or liquefaction risk for cargoes classified accordingly. The applicable IMSBC requirements and verified test results must be followed.

Can one specification cover every end use?

No. Smelters, refineries, cement plants, foundries and construction users may require different chemistry, sizing and penalty limits.
